What is a Microgrid?

In short, a microgrid is exactly what it sounds like. A small energy system that can operate independently or hand-in-hand with the traditional utility grid. These microgrid systems integrate distributed and/or renewable energy resources—such as batteries, generators, solar, and wind—into a single, controllable network that powers your facility, campus, or critical power infrastructure.

Should the traditional utility grid go down for any reason, a microgrid can seamlessly switch to "island mode", keeping your operations online without interruption. Industries such as data centers, petrochemical refining operations, manufacturing plants, or hospital networks can't afford to go without power and greatly benefit from customized microgrid solutions.

Microgrids offer the flexibility to manage energy generation, storage, and consumption on your terms—enhancing reliability, optimizing costs, and supporting sustainability goals.

Benefits of Microgrids

When you take control of your energy, the advantages are immediate—and the impact is long-lasting. Across a variety of industries, microgrid owners benefit from:

resilience

Keep your operations running during grid outages, natural disasters, or unstable utility service. No matter the weather, you're in control.

cost control

Microgrids can reduce peak demand charges, manage energy pricing volatility or rate hikes, and lower your overall energy costs.

independence

Enjoy the flexibility to generate, store, and use your own power—on-site and on-demand. Reduce reliance on the main grid.

sustainability

Integrate renewable energy sources like solar and wind to reduce your carbon footprint and capitalize on environmental incentives.

scalability

Microgrids can evolve with your needs. Expand your energy system without overhauling your infrastructure.

grid support

Provide demand response or sell power back to the grid, turning your energy system into a revenue-generating asset.

Our Microgrid Design & Installation Process

Before a single wire is connected, Power Storage Solutions takes a strategic, step-by-step approach to ensure your microgrid is tailored for success.

From feasibility and financial planning to system optimization, we guide you through the entire process aligning your energy goals with smart design, expert engineering, and lasting performance.

Every detail is planned with precision—because with the right process, powerful results follow.

Step 1: Feasibility Assessment

Each microgrid is designed differently, with different needs in mind. This creates differentiated layouts, maintenance, sustainability measures, and costs associated with your microgrid. Prior to installation, an extensive planning process takes place. First, a feasibility assessment is conducted by an industry expert who will reveal and explain any potential benefits or obstacles related to your system.

Step 2: 30% System Design

Depending on your unique needs and your planning team, design layouts may be conducted during the feasibility assessment. System design includes what size and type of equipment is required, where each part will be located, and how each part will connect with one another in order for the system to function.

Step 3: Cost Estimation & Financial Planning

Financial planning is the most important step. Your planning team will work closely with you to provide the best cost analysis and estimate within your budget. This estimate has a drastic impact on feasibility, budgeting, and equipment. This stage also allows business owners to allocate funds for the project. Business owners may cover the costs with capital or internal financing is typically a viable option. This allows organizations to reap the benefits of the microgrid system, but a third party fronts the cost.

Step 4: System Engineering Design & Utility Interconnection

Creating and installing microgrids requires advanced levels of electrical expertise, equipment, and advanced knowledge of distribution channels. An industry expert will work closely with you to turn ideas into blueprints.

Step 5: Procurement & Construction

Order equipment and schedule installs in a timely manner that least impacts daily operations. Larger pieces of equipment tend to have much longer lead times. Meaning, you shouldn’t wait to order those last. Installing a microgrid also involves extensive knowledge in working with electricity. As a business owner, you must consider how your business will be affected by the microgrid process from start to finish.

Step 6: System Commissioning

The system commissioning phase involves a great deal of testing to ensure your system is meeting its desired function and achieving optimum performance. Factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, and system commissioning are all expected to be conducted during this phase. In addition, you will also receive comprehensive training on different aspects of your microgrid such as its basic functions, operations, and features. Again, it is recommended that you consider how daily operations will be affecting during this process.

Step 7: Operations & Optimization

Regular maintenance of power systems is key to reliability and longevity of your equipment. However, with a microgrid, a little bit more maintenance is required. Microgrids can utilize weather data, performance data, and pricing signals to continuously improve and maintain your system with a controller. It is imperative to have highly trained operators monitoring your system to ensure it is functioning properly and maintaining optimal performance.
