ZincFive technology offsets greenhouse gas emissions four times faster than Lithium-Ion
PORTLAND, Oregon—(September, 2020)— ZincFive, the world leader in nickel-zinc (NiZn) batteries and power solutions, today published the findings of Boundless Impact Research and Analytics’ (Boundless) NiZn battery Climate Impact Profile. Boundless analyzed the climate impact of the ZincFive NiZn battery technology, taking into account key performance indicators such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, water footprint, energy footprint, and hazardous material requirements, scoring ZincFive’s NiZn batteries at 9.4 with 10 representing the highest positive environmental impact.
The Boundless Climate Impact Profile compared ZincFive’s NiZn battery against traditional battery chemistries such as lithium-ion, lead-acid and sodium-sulfur. The Carbon Return on Customer Purchase for ZincFive’s battery offers six times or more avoidance of GHG emissions compared to lithium-ion and four times more compared to lead-acid chemistries. The Climate Impact Score was based on a per kWh impact for the key performance indicators and the ZincFive battery scored higher than the other battery chemistries on almost all environmental key performance indicators.
Safety of NiZn batteries was also considered in the scoring. ZincFive’s batteries do not use toxic substances, but are composed of highly recyclable materials that are not harmful to the environment and non-flammable, resulting in significant environmental and commercial advantages compared to lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries.
Michele Demers, Founder and CEO of Boundless Impact Research and Analytics, said: “Our climate impact assessment of battery storage technologies provide a science-based and independent critique and comparison of the environmental impact of these critical technologies. ZincFive’s nickel-zinc battery offers a significant environmental improvement over other popular battery chemistries and provides a compelling alternative.”
According to the report, ZincFive batteries use safe and abundant materials that mitigate battery hazards, health risks and scarcity concerns. Nickel and zinc are four and five times more abundant in the earth’s crust, respectively, than lithium and lead.
Tim Hysell, ZincFive CEO and Co-Founder, says:
In our electrified world, environmentally conscientious battery technology is no longer optional but a necessity. ZincFive’s batteries provide a breakthrough for support of our customers’ sustainability goals while delivering industry leading performance and safety in operation. More than ever we need to make sure that we are taking care of the climate and environment we will be leaving to future generations.
