Power Storage Solutions Hits Monumental Safety Milestone: 500,000 Man Hours No Lost Time

It’s no secret that the power industry can be dangerous, but at Power Storage Solutions, we believe safety is always within our control. We’re proud to announce that we’ve reached a significant milestone—500,000 man hours without a single lost-time incident.

We believe that this achievement highlights our relentless commitment to creating a safe, secure working environment for our team. By prioritizing rigorous safety protocols and fostering a culture where every individual plays a role in ensuring the safety and well-being of themselves and each other, we continue to set a high standard for safety in the power storage industry.

As of August 2024, Power Storage Solutions has achieved an impressive 500,000 man hours without a single instance of lost time due to workplace accidents or absenteeism related to an accident. In addition to this big milestone, Power Storage Solutions has maintained a flawless record by not having a single Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordable incident for all of 2023 and 2024. These accomplishments are a true testament to our proactive approach to safety, the rigorous measures in place to ensure the well-being of our team, and each individual team member.

Power Storage Solutions’ success in maintaining a safe workplace lies in our detailed safety protocols and a culture that prioritizes the health and safety of our team. Safety is not just a policy for Power Storage Solutions; it is an integral part of our company’s DNA, embedded in every aspect of our operations.

Workplace Safety Protocols

One of the key factors contributing to the company’s safety success is a comprehensive safety training program. Employees at all levels undergo rigorous training to familiarize themselves with potential hazards, safety procedures, and the proper use of equipment. Regular training, pre-job safety meetings and the right to stop policies further enhance preparedness, ensuring that every employee is well-equipped and has the ownership to handle any situation that may arise.

Heath Yackel, our Safety and Compliance Manager, gave us a run-down of the Power Storage Solutions safety training process.

  • To ensure a safety mindset from the start all jobs begin with a tailgate meeting where the job scope is discussed, and everyone’s roles are clearly defined by the team lead.
  • Technicians begin by identifying any potential hazards associated with the work to be performed. Those hazards are listed in the MOP or JSA along with the mitigation steps for each hazard. At any time an employee can exercise Stop Work Authority where an imminent threat potential exists.
  • Stop Work Authority allows workers to cease work until everyone is in agreement that the hazard or risk has been fully mitigated and it is safe to proceed. In many cases a site walk with technicians and customer representatives will take place before work begins. This allows both parties to review the scope of work and evaluate present conditions of the workplace.
  • Working in conjunction with our customers to identify hazards and risks further ensures a safe and successful outcome on each project. Monthly team safety meetings are held regionally to cover safety topics, best practices and review lessons learned.

According to Heath, this method is an effective way to communicate to the team what individuals may have encountered and what methods were used to successfully and safely tackle those challenges.

We asked Heath to provide a quote that resonates with him the most. In response, he mentioned the AT&T Bell System Safety Creed of 1939: “No job is so important & no service so urgent that we cannot take the time to perform our work safely.”. While it is true that accidents drive change in safety, a solid safety program will address potential hazards before they lead to accidents and injuries.

With a people first mentality, an effective safety program should be proactive in nature. Additionally, the program should be revised often to incorporate best practices, lessons learned, and address any new tasks and/or programs. Employees must believe that working safe is the right thing to do all the time and not just when someone is watching.

A Message from the CEO

Power Storage Solutions’ CEO, Terry Cummings, expressed his pride in the company’s achievement. “Our employees are the core of our organization, and their safety is our top priority.
